The first Mickey Mouse comic strip in Europe was published in Finnish newspaper Aamulehti on 11 March 1930. The Mickey craze gave rise to various subject-related products in Finland as well: dolls and rubber toys, notebooks, children's dishes and sweets, books and postcards. Finnish Georg Malmstén’s popular Mikki-songs can be heard on the radio to this day.
Snow White arrived to Finland the same year as the war broke out in 1939. Snow White lodged deep in the collective memory of war-time children: in the midst of all fear, evil and shortage, the beautiful, colourful Snow White brought a moment of joy into the children’s lives. The Snow White movie gave birth to numerous by-products everywhere – and Finland was not an exception: playing cards, paper dolls, toys and children’s dishes. The children’s Snow White coffee set manufactured by porcelain factory Arabia left the greatest impression: nearly all women of the generation remember it. Even if they did not have the set themselves, the neighbour’s children or cousins were sure to have it.
