Moomin Valley inhabitants, 1950’s

The Moomin dolls were produced by ateljé Fauni, an enterprise specialised in troll-like creatures. The Finnish ateljé Fauni was established in 1952.

Moomins

The Moomintroll is a fictional character created by Tove Jansson (1914-2001), a writer, painter, designer and Doctor of Philosophy.

Jansson’s public career began as illustrator for the satirical magazine Garm in 1929. International fame followed after publication of her Moomin books (from 1945) and comic strips, introducing a gallery of characters revolving around the good-willed Moomintroll. Together with her brother Lars Jansson, Tove published the Moomintroll comic strip for 21 years. In 1954-1975, the comic strip delighted thankful readers in more than 40 countries.

Jansson also wrote several Moomin books, which have been translated into more than 30 languages and have served as the basis for numerous theatre, opera, movie, TV, and radio adaptations. The original Moomin books are perfectly suitable for older readers as well; my own favourite is The Invisible Child. Many of Jansson’s books for grown-ups are also quite suitable for reading together with children, for example, the semi-autobiographical The Sculptor’s Daughter.
