Teddy and Bear Hunting

President Theodore (Teddy) Roosevelt (1858-1919) was known for his hunting hobby. In November 1902 the president was called to Mississippi to hunt for four days. In case the president did not succeed in shooting anything someone had captured a bear for him to shoot. But the president refused to shoot the tied bear, considering it to be unfair. Clifford Barryman drew a cartoon about the hunting trip and written across the cartoon were the words "Drawing the Line in Mississippi," which coupled the hunting incident to a political dispute. The bear in the picture looks very much the Teddy Bear we now know! The cartoon was published in the Washington Post on the 16th of November 1902.
